With David Wright’s shoulder impingement putting the Mets captain’s future in an even cloudier state than it already was with his myriad health concerns, Jose Reyes should see a bigger role than what was originally being projected. Reyes was very good in 60 games with the Mets after coming over in a trade from the Rockies, slashing .267/.326/.443 with 8 homers and 9 steals in 279 plate appearances.

We have bumped up his projection to 564 plate appearances, which allows the veteran speedster to rack up 10 homers, 19 steals and 72 runs, good enough for No. 21 on our updated third base rankings.

Reyes is still young enough at 33 to have enough ceiling to post a .300-100-15-70-30 if all goes right. After all, his career highs in each of those categories would add up to .337-122-19-81-78, so it’s not like that’s a bridge too far.

Fantasy Pros has Reyes going as the No. 28 third baseman in its ADP and No. 34 on its expert consensus ranking. Expect to see those numbers rise if the prognosis for Wright’s return experiences any more hiccups and Reyes gets hot in spring training or the World Baseball Classic.
