Prospect StockWatch: Angels C Carlos Perez

Hit a walkoff HR in your debut and you’re bound to get some attention.

Get called up as the starter is hitting halfway to the Mendonza Line and you maybe even get more excitement at the possibility of regular playing time.

But the problem here is that the Angels’ Carlos Perez is barely a prospect and Chris Iannetta will probably start to hit soon and make him irrelevant anyway.

Perez has bounced from the Blue Jays to the Astros to the Angels for one reason: His bat speed isn’t good and he has little power. But if Iannetta keeps struggling, the Angels really don’t have anyone else to play, meaning he could be just fine as an AL-only option for awhile.

Perez does have some things going for him besides the first-game heroics. His career .361 OBP in the minors shows his good plate discipline, and his .361/.418/.556 line in Triple-A this season (7 BBs, 7 Ks) is impressive, albeit in the PCL.

And the team did DFA Drew Butera, so they obviously like Perez –I mean they did trade former top prospect Hank Conger in the deal that brought him to Anaheim after all.
