Fantasy Baseball StockWatch: Tigers SP Shane Greene
There’s a lot to like about Tigers starter Shane Greene when you look at his 2014 numbers.
The 9.3 K/9, 3.40 xFIP and 50.2% ground ball rate are all very nice and he mixes up five different pitches (two-seam and four-seam fastballs, cutter, slider and change-up). Brooks Baseball lists the average velocities on his fastballs at 92 mph (two-seam) and 94 mph (four-seam).
But perhaps the biggest thing for fantasy baseball purposes is that he’s now escaped home games at Yankee Stadium for spacious Comerica Park. His 4.71 ERA and 3.94 xFIP at home last season was much higher than his games outside of Yankee Stadium (2.70 ERA, 2.77 xFIP). Pitching half of his games in Detroit should allow his stuff to play better, and having a strong offense behind him won’t hurt the win totals either.
We have him ranked No. 74 in our in-season fantasy baseball rankings at starting pitcher, but we could see him trending upwards during the season if the move away from New York does remotely close to what it has done for the career of Phil Hughes.
