John Jaso may be the biggest winner in the Ben Zobrist trade for fantasy baseball purposes, as the veteran catcher stands to gain more playing time for the Tampa Bay Rays then he was slated to get with the Oakland Athletics.

Jaso has battled concussion problems the past two seasons, so his days behind the plate may be numbered. The problem in Oakland was that the A’s had signed Billy Butler to man the DH spot, so it was going to be hard to squeeze out even 300 plate appearances.

In Tampa Bay, Jaso should be the No. 2 catcher behind Rene Rivera and the primary DH with David DeJesus also in the picture. There have been rumors that DeJesus will now be dealt, leaving a slew of young outfielders as the only competition for Jaso at DH.

We bumped up Jaso’s fantasy baseball projection to a .262/.353/.395 triple-slash with nine homers in 378 PA, which would make him a viable option to start in a two-catcher mixed league.

Jaso’s last healthy season was 2012 in Seattle, where he put up a .276/.394/.456 line with 10 homers in 361 PA. He is a big-time sleeper in OBP leagues, as he has a career .359 OBP and walk rate of 12.6%.
