Fantasy Baseball StockWatch: Mets SP Rafael Montero
Mets 24-year-old flame-thrower Rafael Montero made a strong statement on Monday with six scoreless innings against the Marlins with six strikeouts.
This comes on the heels of word from ESPN’s Adam Rubin that the Mets “may still trade right-hander Dillon Gee within the month.”
Montero was the Mets’ No. 3 prospect going into last season, but he struggled to a 4.06 ERA in 44.1 IP in New York. He was very good in Triple-A, posting a 3.60 ERA with 9.0 K/9 over 80 innings despite playing in the hitter’s paradise of Las Vegas in the PCL.
Montero’s future may eventually be in the bullpen, but like Carlos Martinez with the Cardinals, the Mets would like to see if he can stick in the rotation first. With Noah Syndergaard likely knocking on the doors by June, the time is now to give Montero a look as a starter.
Montero sits in the low-90s with the fastball and can touch 95, especially adept at working the corners. He also features an above-average changeup and a slider that has flashed plus potential.
We have Montero projected for a 3.63 ERA and 1.24 WHIP in 85 innings with an excellent 8.7 K/9. He is worth adding as a high-ceiling flyer in deeper leagues, but keep an eye on him even in shallower leagues.
