Fantasy Baseball StockWatch: Mat Latos
Former fantasy baseball star pitcher Mat Latos signed with the Chicago White Sox in hopes of reviving his once-promising baseball career. He’ll likely serve as the team’s fifth starter. But should be be one of your starters?
He’s been slipping over the past three seasons, mostly due to injuries and partly due to pitching in hitter-friendly Great American Ball Park. That’s not likely to get any easier as he switches to very hitter-friendly U.S. Cellular Field and facing designated hitters in the American League.
The biggest problem for Latos is that injuries seem to have sapped his fastball, losing more than 2 MPH from his average velocity (93.7 in 2010 to 91.5 last season). When you pitch in a hitter-friendly environment, that’s going to bite you.
It’s possible that his fastball comes back somewhat and he remains injury-free, but you wouldn’t want to take a chance on his as anything but a flier at the end of the draft.
