Fantasy Baseball StockWatch: Blue Jays 2B Devon Travis

Updated: March 26, 2015

Blue Jays prospect Devon Travis is looking like the favorite to win the second base job in Toronto after coming over in an offseason trade for Anthony Gose. Baseball America listed him as the Tigers’ top prospect before the trade and he is currently the Blue Jays’ No. 6 prospect. So what does that mean to fantasy baseball owners?

Travis’ .323/.388/.487 career minor league triple-slash indicate a strong offensive upside, but he’s probably being a bit rushed, given that he’s only played 100 games above Single-A. The Blue Jays don’t have much of a choice, however, considering they were thin at the position to begin with and have seen Maicer Izturis go down to injury as well.

Last season, Travis overcame an early oblique injury to still hit 10 HRs and steal 16 bases in 440 PAs, which is close to what our current projection is for him (8 HRs, 12 SBs in 440 PAs). If he does end up keeping regular playing time all season in that ballpark and lineup, however, there’s no reason you couldn’t see a 15 HR/20 SB season. So if fantasy baseball owners take a late-round flyer on Travis, it could pay off nicely with a top-10 season at second base.
